Taunton & District Mencap Society is one of five Local Mencap Societies in Somerset and is affiliated to National MENCAP. We encourage those with learning disabilities to become involved with organised activities and offer help and support to individuals, their families and carers. We also have a caravan on the Dorset Coast where we offer discounted holidays to people with learning disabilities and their families. Taunton Mencap was established in 1956 and became a Registered Charity in 1962.
Taunton Mencap accepts membership applications from all individuals with learning disabilities within the Taunton Deane area as well as from families and groups/homes. Membership is consistently increasing, particularly among those with learning disabilities living independently within the community. New members will be made very welcome and encouraged to feel part of this friendly and active society.
Taunton Mencap was established in 1956 and became a Registered Charity in 1962. The organisation is run by an Executive Committee consisting of volunteers who all have direct experience, either personally or professionally of learning disabilities. We also have learning disabled committee members. There are two part time members of staff: Dave, our Development Officer and Assistant, Lynda.
Taunton Mencap is a registered charity (Reg. no. 205244). We are a voluntary organisation and do not receive any direct financial support from National Mencap, but we are extremely grateful for the funding we receive from national funding bodies, grants, donations, local charities and from the good people of Taunton and its surrounding villages who always dig deep to support our fundraising events.
We are extremely grateful to White Stuff Taunton for their ongoing support as well as:
Taunton Morris Men
Tesco Bags of Help
Somerset Community Foundation
Friends of Six Acres
And all of our other generous supporters
